Can I teach phonics at home if my child is in school?

Good question! We believe that teachers are an extension of the home–not the other way around. So, yes, it is absolutely acceptable for you as a parent to teach phonics at home in addition to the instruction that is offered in your child’s class room. Since many schools teach phonics in a hit-or-miss fashion, we suggest that parents use one of the phonics handbooks [mentioned in the workshop info handout] to go through all of the phonics steps with their child. In this way, they can be sure that their child does not miss any of the important foundational aspects of sequential phonics instruction. As we say in our workshop…you taught your child to walk and to talk. Why not be the one who teaches him or her to read!
